Early Life of Victor Wembanyama

Victor Wembanyama, born on January 4, 2004, in Le Chesnay, France, hails from a family deeply rooted in athletics. His father, Félix Wembanyama, is a former track and field athlete specializing in the long jump, high jump, and triple jump. His mother, Élodie de Fautereau, is a former basketball player and current coach. Additionally, his older sister, Ève, is a professional basketball player, and his younger brother, Oscar, has participated in both basketball and handball at the youth level. His maternal grandfather, Michel de Fautereau, and grandmother, Marie-Christine, also played basketball professionally.

Initially, Wembanyama engaged in football as a goalkeeper and practiced judo. At the age of seven, he began playing basketball with Entente Le Chesnay–Versailles. His exceptional height and skills quickly became apparent, leading to his recruitment by the Nanterre 92 youth system at age 10. A notable incident occurred during an under-11 game when a coach mistook him for an assistant coach due to his towering presence, only to realize he was a player on the team.

Throughout his youth career, Wembanyama played in age divisions above his own, showcasing his advanced skills and maturity. He played a pivotal role in Nanterre 92’s victory in the 2013 U11 Mini-Basket World Cup and contributed to the team’s success in the 2017 Inter-Comités Tournament. By 2018, he was playing for the French U15 national team and was tested by FC Barcelona’s youth program, although he chose to remain with Nanterre 92.

Wembanyama’s early exposure to basketball through his family, combined with his natural talent and rigorous training, laid a strong foundation for his future success in the sport.
